A few sewing friends an I sewed up a free sewing pattern together and it was so fun! We didn’t get together in person, but instead just chatted about what fabric we would use and how we should sew the pattern.
After we sewed it up, we made a little video to show off our jackets, you can find that by clicking below!

The Free Sewing Pattern we Chose
The free sewing pattern we chose to make was the Free Mika Bomber Jacket Pattern from Tiana’s Closet. It’s a PDF Sewing pattern. If you’d like to learn more about PDF sewing patterns, you can find a great beginner tutorial that walks you through each part of PDF patterns and why they are great by clicking here – PDF Sewing Patterns 101 – A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
A quick word about Tiana’s Closet, I’ve only used this one pattern from the website so far.
The website has a lot of ads, but it is legit at the time of this writing. A number of the ads said something about downloading, but they were not the real place you will find the pattern. I will include the direct link to the pattern here in case you have a hard time finding it on the Tiana’s Closet website – MIKA BASIC BOMBER JACKET SIZE XXS-5XL (A4 LETTER PAPER). There is also an A0 version of the pattern in the first link above (that’s the large copy shop size).
The instructions for this free sewing pattern can be found on the main pattern post here – Free Mika Bomber Jacket Pattern. However, the instructions were lacking.
The pattern itself is fine, there were no problems with the pattern pieces. But the instructions do not work as written. Because of that, my fabulous friend Diana of Eloise and Ezra made a video tutorial on how to sew the pattern! Lucky you! Because we had quite a few conversations ahead of time to figure out the best way to sew it.
Here is that video so that you have and easy time sewing this free pattern:
My DIY Bomber Jacket
Here’s how my bomber jacket turned out:
Since it was a free sewing pattern, I didn’t want to use my most expensive fabric the first time. So I used a Joann Fabrics Pop Knit with very little stretch. That’s the gray colored fabric with the hearts. This pattern is designed for woven fabrics, but you can use very stable knits with it. I just recommend interfacing the area on both sides of the zipper on the bodice and facing first.
I thought I would have enough of the gray fabric to make the whole jacket, but alas, I ran out after cutting the bodice pieces and facing. I had recently bought some really fun stretch fleece (also from Joann fabrics). So, I cut the sleeve from the gray fabric just down to about 3 inches below the sleeve cap.
Then I cut the pink fleece a bit above the bottom of where I cut this gray fabric so that I wouldn’t loose sleeve length when I attached the two pieces.
This gave the sleeve a faux dropped sleeve look. Here’s how it turned out:
That was the only change I made to the pattern besides sewing it different than the instructions said to.
If you want to sew this pattern, scroll back up to the YouTube Video above and follow along with it. You’ll have a much easier time than trying to follow the strange instructions on the Tiana’s Closet Website. Although I do appreciate the free sewing pattern! So thanks to Tiana (who I don’t know, but free sewing patterns are awesome!).
Until next time, happy sewing!
